Recently, we were informed of a health issue of a preschooler at De Tuimelaar Elementary School in De Panne. The little boy suffers from an extremely rare skin disease, Xeroderma pigmentosum. Exposure to UV radiation (mainly from the sun) constantly causes damage in the DNA in all cells of the skin.

In healthy individuals, this minor damage is immediately repaired back. However, this boy's disease ensures that this repair does not happen. As a result, cancer cells develop much faster. Thus, he faces skin cancer at a very young age.

The main prevention is to keep the baby out of the sun. However, older windows allow UV-B light to pass through. Therefore, efforts are being made to apply UV-resistant film in all areas where the little one regularly visits.

The boy's doctor and the school asked us if there was anything we could do to provide the school rooms where he frequently spends time with this UV-resistant film, so that he can experience lessons and lunch breaks together with his classmates. In collaboration with our supplier in solar control films Solar Protection, we have ensured that the common dining and sports hall is fitted with this film.

We hope this will allow him to participate more in school activities where he is well protected.
