Window film bonding in cold weather

If you are concerned with applying clear window film as temperatures drop, have you thought about whether you are using a perforated window film that can withstand the cold?

All self-adhesive vinyl, including perforated window films, have a minimum application temperature, and low temperatures can make installation difficult, if not impossible. At temperatures below the minimum application temperature, the adhesive can harden, preventing the material from adhering properly to the glass.

Extensive testing has shown that Contra Vision® perforated window films can be reliably applied at 4°C. This is significantly lower than most other perforated window films, which typically have a minimum application temperature of 10°C. Some customers have reported success at even lower temperatures, down to below freezing in good, dry conditions on static (non-vehicle) applications.

The minimum application temperature of 4°C refers to the temperature of the glass, not the air temperature, as the temperature of the glass can remain lower than the surrounding air.

We recommend applying graphics in the afternoon when installing in cold weather, preferably after the windows have been warmed by the sun. The temperature should not fall below 0°C within 2 hours of application and not below -5°C within 24 hours of application.

In extreme climates, temperatures should never reach our minimum application of 4°C. Images applied to the inside of a window have many advantages, including applications in colder weather and they are also protected from snowfall and dirt in winter.

For applied graphics with one-way vision (one-way-vision), we have our Performance HD Clear for long-term application and Campaign Clear for short-term applications. Both require white ink.

Tips for successful cold weather installation:

• In colder months, storage temperatures can drop significantly. Do not leave images overnight in a cold environment, such as a vehicle. We recommend warming the material to "room temperature" before application.
• If possible, apply your graphics in the afternoon when the windows have been warmed by the sun. Investigate other steps to increase the temperature of the glass, such as pulling in any canopies or leaving the heater on overnight. Do not use a hot air gun to heat the glass or it may break.
• Make sure the surface is dry and free of condensation and thoroughly clean the surface of dust, grease or any contamination that could affect the adhesion of the material.
• The application should be dry, making sure that images are cut 1-3 mm from the edge of the window and that all joints are butt joints. Do not overlap.
• We recommend not cleaning the graphics for at least 24 hours after installation.
