Roland XG-640 Eco-Solvent Print & Cut

The TrueVIS XG-640 - Roland DG's most productive integrated printer/cutter to date - almost twice as fast as the VG3-640.

Roland TrueVIS XG-640: Fast 64″ eco-solvent printer/cutter for high-quality signage and wraps

The Roland TrueVIS XG-640 is a powerful 64-inch (≈ 1.62 m) eco-solvent printer/cutter designed for signage, wraps, decals, banners, and more. With dual staggered printheads, new TR3 inks, automated features, and speeds up to 819 sq ft/hour, it delivers professional quality, versatility, and productivity.

Key features.

  • Dual staggered print heads for finer ink droplets and higher density, enabling sharp, high-resolution output.
  • Uses new TR3 eco-solvent inks (CMYK ± Light Cyan, Light Magenta, Orange, Green, White) for wider color gamut and improved vibrancy.
  • Ultra-fast print speeds: up to 76 sqm/h in draft/4-color mode; various modes for different trade-offs between quality and speed.
  • Built-in functionality for contour cutting, automatic media spacing adjustment, automatic media capture system and other features that simplify workflow.
  • 7-inch color LCD touch for intuitive operation, plus enhancements such as pinch roll and cut function for perforated sheets to reduce post-processing.
  • Supports a wide range of media: up to 1.625 m width, various thicknesses for printing and cutting, roll and take-up systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes TR3 eco-solvent inks better than previous generations (such as TR2)?

TR3 inks bring several improvements: they are GBL-free (making them safer for user exposure and environmental regulations), they offer higher pigment density (especially noticeable in white inks), and they enable faster throughput. TR3 white, for example, can produce images with ≈ 1.3× the density of white of older TR2 or VG3 models, and throughput is significantly improved for white-based jobs.

How fast will my job finish at different quality settings?

The maximum speed of 819 sq ft/hour (~76 sq m/h) applies in concept or "Billboard" mode (4 colors). If you want higher quality (e.g., 8 colors, lighter dot gain, finer detail), you should use more layers and slower speeds. Always check the mode (draft vs standard vs high quality) in the workflow; Roland provides charts on the datasheet with speeds by quality mode.

Can I cut vinyl or thick materials with it?

Yes. For cutting, the XG-640 supports media up to ~0.4 mm thick with liner or ~0.22 mm without liner. With liner and printing, it can handle media up to ~1.0 mm thick. The blade force is configurable, but extremely thick or rigid materials may require special cutting tools.

What media widths and roll sizes are supported?

The device supports media widths from about 335 mm to 1,625 mm. Outside diameter of roll up to ~250 mm; maximum roll weight ~45 kg. Standard core sizes (50.8 mm or 76.2 mm) are supported. This provides flexibility for smaller jobs as well as large format pieces.

How easy is it to operate for someone new to printing and cutting machines?

Very user-friendly: features such as automatic media spacing adjustment, pinch rollers, automatic media settings reduce manual calibration. The control panel (7-inch color LCD screen) is intuitive. The included software (VersaWorks 7) is also designed with usability in mind and supports both Windows and macOS, with job previews, library colors, nesting and automated workflows. The training curve is manageable for operators already familiar with large format printing.

What are the running costs/consumables?

The main consumables are TR3 ink (color cartridges and white ink), cutting blades, liner media, cleaning fluids, possibly replacement parts such as pinch rollers or print heads over time. Maintenance schedules include print head cleaning and alignment checks. Since eco-solvent inks are used, ventilation and environmental considerations may play a role in costs. Judicious use of draft vs. high quality modes helps control ink consumption.

What about durability / longevity of outdoor prints?

Eco-solvent inks are designed for outdoor durability; signage, vehicle wraps, outdoor decals will do well when exposed to weather, UV light, etc. when using the right media and post-processing (lamination, etc.). White ink enhancements also improve opacity for undercoats or white backgrounds. For backlit or long-term outdoor signage, the choice of media and optional coatings or laminates remains important.

How does it integrate into existing workflows / software?

The XG-640 integrates via Ethernet (Gigabit) and works with the RIP software VersaWorks 7 that supports major file types, color management and spot color libraries. The Roland DG Connect platform offers cloud monitoring, inventory & usage data, remote firmware updates. If you have existing print-cut jobs in formats such as Illustrator, Corel or PDFs, you can continue the workflow seamlessly.

What maintenance and service support is available?

Roland DG offers a warranty (two-year limited warranty in various regions, depending on conditions). Support includes firmware and driver updates, maintenance guides, spare parts and consumables, and a dealer network. Regular maintenance is required for the print heads (cleaning, alignment), the condition of the cutting blades, cleaning the media path and keeping the sensors and rollers dust-free. With proper maintenance, reliability is high.

What is the expected return on investment (ROI)?

ROI depends on job volume, media costs, labor, location and price. But given the high speeds and ability to print + cut in one machine, many companies report a return on investment in less than 6-12 months when operating at medium to high utilization rates. The savings come from fewer machine operations, less labor, faster turnaround times, better color and fewer rejects. Increased throughput of white ink jobs (improved with TR3) also helps.
