Frequently Asked Questions

Can the D-Lam EVO 160TW laminate both cold and hot?

Yes. The top silicone roller is equipped with a heater that allows temperature settings of 40 °C, 45 °C, 50 °C or 55 °C. This feature allows the machine to support cold lamination processes and, if necessary (for certain films or substrates), also help with adhesion through moderate heat. While not a true high-temperature laminator, this hybrid capability is useful in true finishing scenarios where adhesives or substrates require additional activation.

It is important that operators test settings by media type to avoid overheating or damage, especially with heat-sensitive media.

What is the difference between models with and without MediaTrim?

Some D-Lam EVO 160TW units come with the MediaTrim (i.e. cross-cutting) module installed, while others are sold without it. The version with MediaTrim allows you to cross-cut laminated roll media directly at the back of the machine, reducing handling and speeding up workflow. Those without MediaTrim require a separate cutter or guillotine for finishing.

Crucially, many sources indicate that the trimming unit can be built in later, giving you the flexibility to upgrade as needed.

What is the maximum material thickness the machine can laminate?

The D-Lam EVO 160TW supports material thicknesses up to 30 mm (3 cm). This allows thicker media such as foam board, rigid prints or panel substrates to be laminated within the limits. However, when working with thicker materials, careful manual guidance, spacing calibration and lower feed rates are recommended to avoid stress on the roller or wrinkling.

How reliable is the media consumption counter?

The machine has a built-in media counter (up to 50 m) that keeps track of how much laminating film has been used and displays the number of meters remaining on the roll. This is especially useful in production environments to monitor material consumption, schedule roll changes and calculate jobs. When placing a partially used roll, users can accurately set the remaining length using the "+" or "-" keys on the keyboard.

While this is convenient, users should view it as a tool - the actual behavior of the film and the tension on the reel can cause minor deviations, so periodic checking is wise.

What maintenance tasks are needed for long-term reliability?

The most important maintenance tasks are

  • Roller cleaning: Wipe residue from silicone and bottom rollers with appropriate solvents or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Inspect brakes/clutches: Adjust slip clutches and brakes on each axle to properly adjust tension.
  • Calibrate gap/pressure of rollers: Check that clearance and pressure are within the safe and effective range.
  • Blade Maintenance: If using MediaTrim, keep the cutting blade sharp and aligned and replace when necessary to ensure clean cuts.
  • Inspect safety systems: Periodically check that finger guards, emergency stops and cover panels are working.
  • Replace wearing parts: Store spare parts (rollers, belts, bearings, blades) to minimize downtime.
  • Document presets and work environment: Keep copies of presets and ensure that the machine operates in ideal environmental conditions (18-35 °C, 30-80% RH).
  • Training: Ensure operators are familiar with media alignment, tension and heat behavior to reduce errors.

Regular maintenance promotes reliability, reduces unexpected failures and extends the life of the machine.

How does the machine handle media skewed or misaligned?

Media alignment and tension control are critical. The operator must load the rollers centrally and ensure balanced tension via the brake system with slip clutch. Because the machine uses 4 axes, this gives fine control over roller tension, allowing adjustments if the media begins to shift. If misalignment is detected, pause laminating, reposition the media and continue. Training and vigilance are essential - early correction is easier than trying to salvage a misaligned long runway.

What environment is ideal for installing the D-Lam EVO 160TW?

For stable high-quality results, install the machine in an enclosed area with an ambient temperature between 18°C and 35°C and a relative humidity between 30% and 80% RH. Outside this range, substrates may expand/shrink, adhesives may behave inconsistently and laminating quality may decrease.

In addition, the floor should be level, the space around the machine should be clear (for feeding and trimming), and ambient lighting should allow operators to easily recognize alignment and defects.

What safety features does the D-Lam EVO 160TW have?

Safety is built in via:

  • Adjustable finger protection (usually 3 positions) to prevent the hand from being accidentally inserted between the rollers.
  • Emergency stop switches on left and right sides.
  • Sealed side panels protect electrical components.
  • Overpressure protection to prevent roller damage or unsafe pressure.

Operators must also follow training and not bypass safety devices to ensure safe operation.

Can I upgrade (or retrofit) MediaTrim later if my device is not equipped with it?

Yes. According to several sources, the trimming unit (MediaTrim/EASYTRIM) can be retrofitted to machines that originally came without it (e.g., part number 26218 in the base specification). This flexibility allows you to start with basic lamination and later add cross-cutting capability as needed.

Of course, retrofitting may require mechanical alignment, calibration and possibly some downtime during installation.

What skill level does the operator need to use this machine effectively?

Although the D-Lam EVO 160TW has an intuitive interface and automation (roller lift, auto pressure), operators will benefit from training on:

  • Media tension, alignment and handling
  • Understanding how heat affects adhesives and substrate properties
  • Adjusting roller spacing, pressure and speed for different media
  • Detect and correct errors early (skewing, creasing, air bubbles)
  • Safe operation of emergency stop and protective functions
  • Correct use and handling of the trimming module (if installed)

With training, even less experienced users can produce consistent, high-quality results. Many vendors offer installation training and documentation support.
